Why the text in a PDF cannot be edited
There are five common reasons, and you can usually work out which one you have in a few seconds without any special tool.
1. It is a picture of a document
The test: try to select a line with the mouse. If the entire page highlights as one rectangle, or nothing highlights, there is no text in the file — only an image of text.
This service will tell you the page is scanned and will not let you edit it. It does not perform character recognition. The realistic route is to go back to whatever produced the document and export a fresh copy. More on the difference.
2. The file does not say what its characters mean
The test: select a line and copy it into a text editor. If you get gibberish, boxes or the wrong letters, the file is missing the map from the codes it stores to the characters they represent.
Text can still be drawn correctly without that map — the viewer is painting glyph shapes, not letters. But an editor cannot safely change words it cannot read, so blocks where a fifth or more of the glyphs are unreadable are marked unsupported. Why copied text comes out garbled.
3. The text is inside a form field
The test: click the text. If a cursor appears in a box with a border or a tinted background, it is a fillable field.
A field’s contents belong to the form, not to the page, and are stored separately from the page’s drawing instructions. This editor does not change field values; a form filler is the right tool.
4. The text was converted to outlines
The test: select all. If most of the page selects but one heading or logo is skipped, that part is no longer text — it has been converted to shapes, which design tools often do to guarantee the typeface.
This is detected by looking for dense small paths with no text instruction covering them, which is a reasonable signal rather than a certainty, so it is always reported as a suspicion.
5. The background behind the text cannot be matched
The test: look at what is behind the words. A photograph, a gradient or a patterned band means there is no single colour that would cover the old text invisibly.
