How it works

Three steps, on your device

  1. 1

    Choose the PDF

It opens in the watermark tool on this device, and is not uploaded to our servers.

  2. 2

    Set the watermark

Text or an image; size, colour, opacity and angle; once or tiled; the pages to mark. The preview is the actual result, page by page.

  3. 3

    Download it

Save the new PDF, or share it straight from your phone. The original file is left as it was.

Common questions

Before you start

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no limit on how many files, and no watermark of ours added.

Is my PDF uploaded?

Not to our servers. Your browser reads the file and writes the new one on your device, and the page that does the work loads no advertising or third-party analytics. We receive only a count of what the tool did — that it ran and roughly how many pages — never the file, its name or the watermark text. If you choose the file on this page, your browser keeps it briefly in its own storage to hand it to the tool, and removes it as soon as the tool opens it. The privacy policy has the details.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, on recent iPhone and Android browsers. Very large files are better done on a computer, which has more memory.

Does a watermark protect my PDF?

No. It is a visible label that tells a reader a document is a draft, a copy or meant for them alone. It does not stop anyone copying the text underneath, and someone with a PDF editor can remove it or crop it off. To take information out of a file, a watermark is not the tool. Comments, highlights and form fields are drawn above a page’s content by every PDF reader, so they stay above the watermark even when it is placed over the content.

Which languages can the text be in?

Latin letters (Helvetica, Times or Courier), Chinese, Japanese or Korean (Noto Sans CJK). The Chinese, Japanese and Korean fonts hold the common characters — about 7,800 Chinese and Japanese characters with kana, and 2,350 Korean syllables — and are downloaded from this site the first time they are needed. Japanese is drawn with the Chinese forms of the characters the two share. Other scripts are not supported yet; an image watermark works in any language.

Can I remove a watermark with this?

No. This tool only adds one.

Can I change the words in the PDF too?

That is what the PDF editor is for: retype words already in the file, in its own font where the file allows.
